Capitalizing on the Region's Future in Energy
Southwestern Pennsylvania's (SWPA) energy cluster already contributes more than $13.7 billion to the regional gross metro product. The area's plentiful natural resources, advanced energy engineering, energy component manufacturing and thriving community of innovators all uniquely position SWPA to take a leading role in the development, storage and transmission of clean energy technologies.
Through the Commonwealth's Energy Independence Fund and the $10 million grant awarded by the Alternative Energy Development Program, IW serves as the catalyst and hub of early-stage energy activities in SWPA helping to accelerate the development of alternative energy and energy efficiency technologies within area universities, the National Energy Technology Laboratory in SWPA, and IW portfolio companies. As the SWPA Ben Franklin Technology Partner, IW has the funding and expertise to advance the region's energy startups by:
- Identifying high-potential research and ensuring that it gets commercialized
- Stimulating collaborative opportunities among the many research and commercial resources here
- Providing investments and business assistance to start and grow promising companies
IW has formed the Energy Alliance of Greater Pittsburgh in conjunction with the Allegheny Conference of Community Development to further increase the scale of the region's energy industry. IW hosts innovative events such as EnergyMatch that bring together local entrepreneurs, researchers and funders to connect, develop new products, form R&D teams, collaborate on grant opportunities and seek investment capital.
