Speeding University R&D to Market
The world-renowned universities in the Pittsburgh region are a vital source of research and technologies, a starting point for innovation. With an annual research cache of nearly $1 billion in federal grant money, the universities have vast potential for technologies and companies to spin out for commercialization. IW works in partnership with local universities, including Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne University and Robert Morris University to identify and cultivate high-potential ideas, and provide grants up to $25,000 to help speed commercialization. IW has provided $564,000 in University Innovation Grants (UIGs) since the program's inception.
Our University Innovation Grants are applied to:
- Technology validation
- Market research
- Prototype development
- Intellectual property evaluation
IW also works with university partners on educational initiatives designed to demystify the commercialization process for university researchers and make it easier for them to see a path from their research to market potential.
