With regional early-stage dealflow showing signs of an uptick in the last two years, venture capitalists are taking notice.  Many of these VCs are from outside the Pittsburgh region, bringing new money into companies here.
Southwestern PA’s early-stage community is underserved when it comes to venture capital, local investors say, and that represents an opportunity for investors from outside the region. In each of the past four years, more than half of all local deals involved VCs from outside the region, who often syndicated with Pittsburgh-based investors. Full Story

TowerCare
TowerCare is targeting mid-size nonprofits with its internet-based software that enables the groups to achieve double digit increases in donations and improved operating efficiencies.   Many of these organizations are still keeping track of donations by hand or with Excel, neither of which is up to the increasingly sophisticated task. The market has been receptive—one of TowerCare’s biggest challenges is hiring enough sales people to close its backlog of qualified sales leads. Full Story

TalkShoe
As podcasting continues to move toward the mainstream, TalkShoe is targeting this growing market for connecting people over the internet with voice.  It began as a Web 2.0 company that hosts live interactive podcasts for everyone from wine connoisseurs to Baptist ministers to sports fans, and records them for downloading.  Now it’s scaling to capitalize on the fast-growing social networking market which is attracting hundreds of millions of individual and corporate users, venture capital and interest from Wall Street.

RedZone
The nation’s decaying infrastructure may be a safety and financial nightmare for many levels of government.  But it’s an attractive business opportunity for RedZone, a high-growth company focusing on the front lines of infrastructure improvements.  In the last two years, RedZone revenues have increased by 400%, as it digitizes what it calls ‘the world’s 3D geo-spatial data’ so that governments and other infrastructure owners have an exact record of what they own, where it is and what condition it is in.
