Data on the Menu: Tackling Global Waste One Clean Plate at a Time

by | May 7, 2026

Clean Plate Innovations is transforming how large-scale dining operators understand and reduce food waste. Founded by Nolan Sulpizio, the company developed CPIsight, a computer vision and machine learning platform that captures real-time plate waste data to help institutions optimize procurement, improve forecasting, reduce inventory loss, and strengthen sustainability reporting. By turning uneaten food into actionable operational intelligence, Clean Plate Innovations is helping dining facilities make smarter, data-driven decisions at scale.

Challenge

Beginning as a fast-paced hackathon project, the mission shifted from a pitch-worthy concept to a field-ready reality. Sulpizio began assembling a multidisciplinary team, recruiting Duquesne alumni, faculty, and industry advisors to help engineer a prototype capable of withstanding real-world rigors. This phase was about more than building a tool; it was about assembling the collective expertise needed to transform a hackathon project into a credible, enterprise-grade business.

The immediate hurdle was spinning up a ruggedized prototype. Moving beyond the drawing board required a functional, field-engineered system capable of capturing live data with enterprise-grade precision. Establishing this technical legitimacy was the essential precursor to launching the pilot programs and proof-of-concept efforts needed to validate the platform’s real-world potential.

Billions of dollars are lost annually in large-scale and industrial dining facilities due to overproduction, unpredictable demand, and uneaten meals. Traditional mitigation strategies often target back-of-house waste even though two-thirds of total loss is actually generated from one primary source—the consumer’s plate. Clean Plate Innovations captures this overlooked but critical data, transforming “scrap” into actionable intelligence to optimize procurement, daily output, and inventory.

Founded by Nolan Sulpizio , Clean Plate Innovations is building a high-fidelity data platform that helps dining operators measure and reduce plate waste at scale. Its core technology, CPIsight, leverages computer vision and machine learning to track uneaten food at the point of disposal. Using depth-sensing cameras and neural networks, the system analyzes plate remnants in real time measuring food type, size, and volume before translating that data into actionable insights through a live analytics dashboard. The result is a continuous, automated waste audit that helps operators forecast demand, optimize inventory, align menus with consumer preferences, and strengthen sustainability reporting.

Sulpizio launched the concept during a Techstars Startup Weekend while studying Supply Chain Management and Entrepreneurship at Duquesne University. What began as a fast-paced hackathon project quickly evolved into a scalable platform rooted in Sulpizio’s background in data analytics and operational optimization. Built on the conviction that better measurement leads to better management, the company transforms the plate waste problem into a strategic asset. By applying data-driven discipline to the point of disposal, Clean Plate Innovations gives dining operators a sophisticated tool to tighten inventory, bridge the data gap, and finally turn sustainability goals into a measurable reality.

Solution

Clean Plate Innovations found its technical anchor in the 2024 Robotics Factory Scale Program. Alongside refining their early prototype, Sulpizio and his team established the operational discipline necessary to turn their mission into a scalable market reality. By embedding the team within a cohort of like-minded startups, the program introduced lean methodologies, rigorous end-user research, and milestone-driven accountability. This consistent cadence of mentorship empowered the team to identify systemic friction points and rebuild them into a more focused, field-ready business strategy.

Equally critical was access to the Robotics Factory prototyping facilities, which fundamentally expanded the engineering capacity of Clean Plate Innovations. Using the lab’s rapid prototyping tools like 3D printers, electronics workstations, and printed circuit board fabrication equipment, the team iterated on camera mounts, enclosures, and early system integrations. The program also supported early bill-of-materials development and manufacturing planning, helping the team begin designing for scalable production. Clean Plate Innovations was even able to deploy an early version of its system within the Robotics Factory kitchen as an MVP test environment, validating the hardware and software integration in a real-world setting.

The momentum continued when Clean Plate Innovations joined Innovation Works’ 2025 AlphaLab hardware accelerator, securing $100,000 in investment alongside dedicated workspace and expert-led programming. This phase focused on expanding customer discovery and formalizing a scalable manufacturing strategy to support a growing pipeline of deployments. Together, the Robotics Factory and AlphaLab provided the technical resources and mentorship necessary to move the venture beyond early development and into an operationally ready state. Clean Plate Innovations has harnessed a deep regional support network to accelerate its growth. A first-place win at the 2024 Duquesne New Venture Challenge provided a vital mix of seed capital, legal guidance, and strategic consulting to professionalize the venture. These resources supported the launch of a flagship partnership with Seneca Valley School District to pilot the CPIsight Alpha platform. By working directly with operational decision-makers rather than traditional IT gatekeepers, Clean Plate Innovations is refining its technology within the local economy to meet the specific demands of large-scale institutional dining.

Looking ahead, Clean Plate Innovations is poised for rapid expansion as it scales production at regional facilities and advances new pilot opportunities. More than a waste-tracking tool, CPIsight serves as a real-time intelligence layer for dining operations, translating visual waste patterns into precise metrics on consumer behavior and inventory loss. These insights enable operators to sharpen demand forecasting, optimize procurement, and eliminate systemic inefficiencies, delivering stronger margins, more efficient supply chains, and data-driven decision-making at scale.
